We caught up with our newest Wee Rebel Calum Mclean to chat barbering, football, fashion and only lasting 8 hours in Ayia Napa.
Q. How long have you been barbering for?
A. 5 years and I love it!
Q. What's your signature style
A. One of my first jobs was in a hairdressers where I was a gents stylist, a lot of my clients had longer hair so I perfected surfer and mod cuts, now my most popular styles, and my favourites to do, are tight clipper cuts / skin fades. Fashions change though so you can’t limit yourself to just one style.
Q. Your fav tune to cut hair to
A. Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell, Ain't no Mountain High Enough. It’s a classic!
Q. We heard a rumour that you are the go to barber for Glasgow’s footballing elite, spill the beans, who’s barnet have you styled?
A. Hahahah, I absolutely love football and have cut the hair of quite a few of the Celtic lads, which is in honour because I am HUGE Celtic fan, Tom Rogic, Nir Bitton, and Cristian Gamboa were all really cool and they loved their cuts! Limmy and tennis player Bernard Tomic have also been in to see me, that’s one of the cool things about barbering, you never know who’s going to sit on your chair!
Q. What hair product can you not live without?
A. I love hair powder, I use it everyday in my own hair and with almost all my clients. Kevin Murphy Powder Puff is amazing, it adds volume and thickness and still allows the hair to move. I actually have pretty fine hair so this stuff is a life saver!
Q. Tell us a random fact about yourself?
A. I went on holiday to Ayia Napa and only lasted 8 hours, it was an epic holiday fail! Ask me about it when you come in.
Q. What do you love about barbering?
A. Believe it or not I used to work in construction, as you can imagine it wasn’t really something I was passionate about, actually I bloody hated it, but I did like working with my hands, which is why I decided to give barbering a shot! I love the creative process of barbering, working with my clients hair to create a style that will suit them and that they can manage at home. There are also loads of amazing opportunities available within the industry, like travel, stage work and fashion shoots, these are things I def plan in getting involved with in the future.
Q. Apart from barbering what else floats your boat?
A. Watching football is a big part of life, I am also really into my music, I listen to everything from Stevie Wonder to my favorite band Radiohead and try to go to gigs as often as I can. I’m not much of a drinker but I love going out for nice food, I really love Porter and Rye which is handily as it’s next door to the barbershop! I need to work hard so I can fund my shopping habit, and I’ve got expensive taste! I love Givenchy, Louboutin, Moncler and I am obsessed with buying trainers.
Q. How can we get our hair as fly as yours, tell us your top tip?
A. Blow dry your hair properly! So many guys just wash their hair, throw their products on it and expect it to sit, you need to take the time to properly dry it for the products to work and for the style to sit properly
Q. Who’s barnet would you most like to get your hands on?
A. Brendan Rodgers (Celtic Manager), he’s my hero!
Q. You seem like a pretty sound guy that know’s how to hold a set of clippers, any other reasons someone should come in and see you for a haircut?
A. I am a perfectionist, and I love to make people feel good about themselves!
